It seems like there are others who are coming up to the ranks of companies such as Huawei, Samsung, and Apple as in-house chipset designers. Xiaomi has announced their first smartphone processor.
Unlike the expected name Pinecone processor, Xiaomi has decided to call the chip Xiaomi Surge S1. The chipset will be used to power the Mi 5c smartphone.
While several other companies are busy at the Mobile World Congress 2017 at Barcelona, Xiaomi has made this announcement at the National Convention Center in Beijing. Besides their announcement of Surge S1 chipset, they also announced the Xiaomi Mi 5C smartphone. Mi 5C smartphone has been powered by their in-house chip Surge S1.
Chief Executive of Xiaomi, Lei Jun said that by creating the chipset Xiaomi has achieved a point of zenith. This move is a major step ahead in the development of their company. To deliver their undertaking to make innovation available for all, they would have to master the staple expertise of their trade and closely assimilate the development of their hardware with their software. This will enable them to manufacture better smartphones which will unswervingly amaze the industry and enhance customer delight, he added.
Pinecone is a fully-owned subsidiary of Xiaomi that was set up on October 16, 2014. Pinecone was set up for research and development to design and develop chipset.
Surge S1 Features
The chipset has an octa-core processor with four high-performances ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz and 4 power-efficient ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4 GHz, arranged using big. LITTLE structure so the eight cores can be actually used.

It also features a quad-core ARM Mali T860 GPU. It has the support of VoLTE, and there is a 32 bit DSP for voice processing. This will give its users a wonderful sound quality even if the place is noisy. It is made on the 28 nm HPC process and consumes very less power which has been specifically made so for everyday use. It also has support for ASTC and AFBC image compression technology with Vulkan standard.
Surge 1 has been equipped with an in-house Image Signal Processor(ISP), also developed by Xiaomi. The 14 bit dual ISP offers light sensitivity up to 150% and a dual noise reduction algorithm which reduces noise and conserves aspect, which gives you implausible pictures even in a dimly lit environment.
The Mi 5C that has been armed with the Surge 1 chipset has a 5.15-inch display. The smartphone will function with Android 7.1 Nougat and MIUI. There is a 12-megapixel camera on the rear and an 8megapixel front camera. There is a 3GB RAM with an internal storage capacity of 64GB.
Xiaomi also revealed that the AnTuTu score of Surge 1 higher than Helio P2o and Snapdragon 625 chipsets. Although the AnTuTu scores do not actually speak about the life performance of the chipset the Surge 1 definitely takes its place between these two processors.
